Where to stay for the Great Barrier Reef
The reef is more than 2,300 km long, so where you sleep decides which trips are easy. A hotel in Cairns does not put you next to every departure point. Check the meeting point of your trip first, then book a bed within reach of it.
If your reef day is fixed, look at Great Barrier Reef tours from Cairns, Port Douglas and Airlie Beach and choose the base that matches. The town guides for Cairns, Port Douglas and the Whitsundays have more detail.

Bases compared
Which reef trips are easy from where.
| Base | Reef trips that start here | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Cairns centre and Esplanade | Moore Reef and Green Island from the Reef Fleet Terminal, plus Fitzroy Island by ferry | The terminal is at 1 Spence Street. Check the walk from your hotel. |
| Cairns Northern Beaches | Same trips, plus Port Douglas trips with hotel bus pickup | Transfers cost extra on some multi-day trips |
| Port Douglas | Agincourt Reef pontoon, Low Isles, Daintree day trips | Agincourt boarding is at 9:30 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. departure |
| Airlie Beach | Hardy Reef, Whitehaven Beach, sailing | Hardy Reef trips also start from Daydream and Hamilton Island |
| Hamilton Island | Hardy Reef, scenic flights over Heart Reef | Own airport with direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane |
| Lady Elliot or Heron Island | Coral cays of the southern reef | Flight or boat transfer is separate from the room |
| Lizard Island | Far northern reef | Reached as part of a resort package |
For most first-time visitors, Cairns centre is the simplest base because several reef and island departures leave from one terminal. Choose Port Douglas if Agincourt and the Daintree matter most, and Airlie Beach if the Whitsundays are the goal.
Our pick: a reef trip from a Cairns centre base
Our take: this overnight trip includes transfers from accommodation in the Cairns centre, so it suits a base in the city.

Hotel in Cairns: centre, Esplanade and Northern Beaches
The centre and the Esplanade are the starting area for the Lagoon and the Reef Fleet Terminal. The Esplanade Lagoon is a supervised public pool with free entry. The council closes it for about 5 weeks for maintenance roughly every two years, so check its status before you plan around it.
The Northern Beaches lie outside the centre. One three-day liveaboard includes transfers from the city centre, while pickups from the Northern Beaches cost extra. Port Douglas trips offer hotel buses in Port Douglas and from Cairns and the Northern Beaches, so you can stay in either place.

Port Douglas and Airlie Beach
Port Douglas is the base for Agincourt Reef, Low Isles and day trips into the Daintree. Four Mile Beach has a seasonal stinger enclosure. An open enclosure is not fully stingersafe, so follow lifeguard instructions and warning signs. For the season, see best time to visit.
In the Whitsundays, Airlie Beach is the mainland base and Hamilton Island is an island base. A Hardy Reef day trip can start at Port of Airlie, Daydream or Hamilton Island, so pick the departure that fits your bed. Sleeping on an island and visiting the outer reef are separate services.
Island resorts on the reef
On remote islands the way in is part of the booking. Lady Elliot Island flights are organized together with the stay, and the flight is not automatically included in the room price. Heron Island boat transfers are booked and charged on top of the accommodation. Lizard Island, about 250 km northeast of Cairns, has no regular flights or ships except as part of a resort package. See the guide to Lady Elliot and Heron Island.
Nightly rates depend on your dates and on the island, so compare for the exact days. For the southern reef near Hervey Bay, see where to stay on K'gari.

Settle three things before you book
They save more trouble than the choice of hotel.
Where your trip departs
Look up the meeting point for each tour you want and measure it from your bed. A stay in Cairns is not automatically a walk from the terminal.
What transfers cost
Hotel buses and pickups differ by trip and by area. Read what your tour includes for your hotel area.
Your month
From November to May the higher stinger risk and the rain affect beaches and boat days. See Cairns weather by month.
