An independent Great Barrier Reef travel guide

Cairns, the Gateway to the Reef

Cairns is the main base for Great Barrier Reef day trips, with outer reef pontoons, island ferries, Kuranda and the Daintree within reach. Here is what to do and where to start.

Cairns as your base for the reef

Cairns sits on the coast of tropical north Queensland. The reef is offshore, so every reef visit starts with a boat. Most departures leave from the Reef Fleet Terminal at 1 Spence Street. One full-day pontoon trip to Moore Reef covers about 47 km and takes roughly 90 minutes each way, depending on the weather. That trip leaves at 10:15 and returns at 17:30.

Cairns also works well for a few days on land. The Esplanade has a free lagoon pool, a marina boardwalk and plenty of restaurants. For the reef itself, compare the options below or go straight to our guide to Great Barrier Reef tours from Cairns.

The Moore Reef fare includes the fuel surcharge. Optional dives cost extra: an introductory or certified dive costs A$149, with an introductory dive from age 12. The reef charge is A$8.50 per person for a full day and A$4.25 for less than 3 hours in the Marine Park. It rises to A$9.00 and A$4.50 from 1 April 2027. Ask whether it is in the fare.

For most first-time visitors, an outer reef pontoon day gives the most reef time. If you have only half a day or prefer a shorter boat ride, Green Island is the easier choice. More on both is in our guides to Green Island and snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef.

Our take: this is the full-day trip for the outer reef, with five hours at two outer reef sites.

Things to do in Cairns

Beyond the boat trips.

Esplanade Lagoon

The lagoon is a free, supervised swimming pool beside the sea. Opening hours are Thursday to Tuesday 06:00 to 21:00 and Wednesday 12:00 to 21:00. The council runs a maintenance program every two years that closes it for about 5 weeks, so check before you go.

Esplanade and marina boardwalk

A palm-lined path runs along the waterfront, and a timber boardwalk leads past the yachts in the marina. Both are easy evening walks.

Green Island and Fitzroy Island

Both islands are day trips by ferry. Green Island is 27 km offshore. Fitzroy Island has national park walking tracks that are not wheelchair accessible, and no cars.

Daintree and Mossman Gorge

The rainforest north of Cairns is a World Heritage area in its own right. You can go on a day trip or continue north to Port Douglas.

Kuranda: Skyrail and the scenic railway

Kuranda is a village in the rainforest above Cairns. You can reach it by the Skyrail cableway or by the Kuranda Scenic Railway.

Skyrail is being upgraded in 2026/27 and runs a reduced service during the works. On some days the cableway runs as a loop between Kuranda and Barron Falls, with a shuttle between Smithfield and Kuranda. Do not assume the full ride from Smithfield. Normal through running is planned from November, subject to change. The cableway also closes on 2 and 3 November, 8 and 9 December and 25 December 2026.

The railway runs to a regular timetable. Trains leave Cairns at 08:45 or 09:30 and reach Kuranda at 10:40 or 11:25. Return trains leave Kuranda at 14:45 or 15:30 and arrive in Cairns at 16:40 or 17:25. Arrive at least 30 minutes early. Weather and maintenance can change the timetable, and the railway does not run from 2 to 6 November or on 25 December 2026.

Weather, stingers and the best months

What the climate means for your plans.

Wetter and drier months

Cairns averages more than 400 mm of rain a month from January to March and under 50 mm a month from June to September. That is a statistical pattern, not a forecast for your dates. The official cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April.

Weather by month →

Stinger season

Box jellyfish and Irukandji can be life-threatening. The higher-risk season is roughly November to May, but dangerous jellyfish can occur at any time of year. Wear a full-body lycra or neoprene suit when you snorkel. In an emergency call 000, apply vinegar and get medical help. Irukandji symptoms can start 20 to 40 minutes after a sting.

Best time to visit →

Whales

Humpback whales are around from May to September. Minke whales are seen mainly from May to July in the Ribbon Reefs north of Cairns. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Getting around and where to stay

Airport, transfers and neighbourhoods.

From the airport

Cairns Airport is about 7 km from the centre and handles domestic and international flights. Taxi ranks stand outside both terminals. A new airport bus, line 100, is planned from 23 November 2026 for A$0.50 a trip, every 30 minutes from 04:00 to 22:30.

Getting there →

City centre and Esplanade

This area is close to the lagoon and the Reef Fleet Terminal. Staying in Cairns does not automatically mean walking distance to the terminal, so check your departure point.

Northern Beaches

Transfers matter here. One liveaboard includes pickup from city-centre hotels but charges for Northern Beaches pickups.
