Helicopter and scenic flights over the Great Barrier Reef

A scenic flight shows the reef as a pattern of lagoons and coral blocks that boats cannot show. The most popular targets are Heart Reef, Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet in the Whitsundays. Flights also run from the outer reef pontoons at Port Douglas and, from Cairns, as helicopter reef flights and fly and cruise combinations.

Price, length and group size differ a lot between flights, and a flight often needs a minimum number of passengers. The examples below are 2026 prices, and they are not a complete market list.

Our picks: Great Barrier Reef scenic flights

Our take: choose the Airlie Beach flight for Heart Reef, which you see from the air only. The Cairns flight is a short fixed-wing flight along the outer edges of the reef, and the outer reef cruise with a 10-minute helicopter flight adds hours in the water.

Heart Reef: what you can and cannot do

The heart-shaped formation lies in the Hardy Reef area.

You can see Heart Reef from the air on a plane, seaplane or helicopter flight. It is not only an aerial sight, though. Some tours fly by helicopter to a pontoon near the formation, run a glass-bottom boat around it and offer optional snorkeling in the adjacent lagoon. That is a visit to the lagoon, not to the heart itself.

The heart-shaped coral is protected. Swimming or snorkeling at the heart is not allowed, and water visits take place at nearby spots. Do not expect to land on the formation, and book the version of the tour that matches what you want to do.
